How the starting points are made

Every preset reads the same forecast the rest of the site publishes

The rating words

The calls are the site’s own scale, keyed on the favorite’s chance: under 55 in 100 is a Toss-up, a dead heat; 55 to 65 is Tilt, slightly favored; 65 to 85 is Lean, favored; 85 to 98 is Likely, heavily favored; 98 and up is Solid, almost certain. Prefer to pick sides only? Switch the call to Winners.

Our forecast and the Toss-ups

“Our forecast” rates every race exactly as its race page does, from the edition of 2026-09-26. “Toss-ups for you” leaves only the races we rate a Toss-up uncalled and locks the rest to our favorite, until you unlock them.

Waves

The slider is the national environment, the same measure our polls page publishes (D+7.9 today). Each point moves every race about 0.73 points of margin from our forecast, the pass-through our House forecast shows against the 2024 vote, read through the same 7.2-point uncertainty as Lines. At today’s environment it reproduces our forecast exactly.

2024 again and the markets

“2024 again” rates each race by how its state, or its district on the 2026 lines, voted for president in 2024, through the same curve. “Markets” reads each race’s Polymarket price where one trades (as of 2026-09-26); races without one keep our forecast.

The totals

Seats not on the ballot count for the party that holds them. In the Senate, independents who caucus with Democrats count with the Democratic caucus, and a 50–50 chamber goes to the vice president’s party. Where both candidates on the November ballot share a party, the seat is locked to it.

Sharing

The address bar always holds your map. “Copy link” writes every call into it, so a shared map stays as you left it even after our forecast moves. The images come in square, landscape and story sizes.
